Coronation Street star Jack P. Shepherd, best known for his role as David Platt since joining the ITV soap in 2000, recently opened up about some shocking and memorable experiences with fans during his early years of fame. The 37-year-old actor, who began portraying the iconic character at just 12 years old, gave fans a peek behind the curtains in a fascinating episode of the On the Sofa podcast.
A Surprising Encounter in the Supermarket
During the podcast, Jack shared an amusing yet bizarre moment from his early fame. While grocery shopping with his mum, Janet, a visibly upset elderly woman approached him in the freezer aisle. The woman, seemingly unable to separate Jack from his mischievous on-screen persona, took out her frustration by hitting him with her handbag.
“She was furious and didn’t say anything at first,” Jack recalled. “I was only 12 at the time and playing a cheeky character on the show. She fully hit me, and my mum had to step in and softly reassure her, ‘It’s not real.’” This humorous yet surreal exchange is a testament to the deep emotional connection viewers form with long-running soap opera characters.
Christmas Lights Chaos in Kippax
Another standout memory from Jack’s career takes us to Kippax, West Yorkshire, where he was invited to turn on the town’s Christmas lights as a teenager. While this should have been a festive occasion, the event turned into a chaotic scene as thousands of fans clamored to get close to him. Jack, who was around 13 or 14 at the time, described the crowd as “a sea of people rushing the stage.”
“The crowd became so intense that I had to seek shelter in a nearby Co-Op supermarket,” Jack recounted. “The store staff even locked the doors to keep everyone out while fans surrounded the building.”
Despite going incognito by dressing as a Co-Op employee, the disguise didn’t last long. “Everyone realized who I was. It felt like a scene from a zombie movie when the fans rushed towards me. The police had to step in and provide a motorbike escort to get me out safely.” Jack jokingly added that he handed his makeshift Co-Op uniform back as soon as he made it to safety.
A Reminder of Soap Fame’s Impact
These stories not only highlight Jack’s acting prowess but also demonstrate the unique relationship between soap opera stars and their audience. The strong emotional investment fans have in characters like David Platt can lead to unforgettable, if occasionally overwhelming, encounters.
