The official White House X account posted a black and white picture of the exchange with the caption ‘The goal is always peace.’ Many observers noted the resemblance between this photo and the historic confrontation between Nixon and Khrushchev at the American National Exhibition in Moscow in 1959.
While Trump and Putin attempted to discuss solutions to the ongoing war in Ukraine, experts worry that such public engagements may serve to legitimize the Russian leader, who faces global condemnation for his actions.
