Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has expressed optimism for the 2025/26 season despite their narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League opener. Speaking after the match, Fernandes reflected on the performance and highlighted the unwavering support of the United fans as a driving force for their upcoming games.
United Falls Short Despite Promising Performance
The match at Old Trafford was decided by a 13th-minute goal from Riccardo Calafiori, capitalizing on a corner mistake by United’s goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. While United responded energetically, creating several chances in search of an equalizer, they failed to convert those opportunities into goals.
Fernandes admitted that the loss wasn’t entirely unfair but emphasized the team’s efforts and areas to build upon. “I wouldn’t say unfair, but I obviously think we came up a little bit short today,” he noted in a post-match interview with MUTV. “It’s very difficult to see the positive things when you lose the game, but we need to look forward and see what we can improve next week.”
Fans Provide Hope for the Season
While the defeat was disappointing, Fernandes underscored the importance of the fans’ unwavering support. “When I finished the game, what gave me hope for the season being very good and positive was the way the fans reacted,” he said. “When we came around and entered the tunnel, they gave us encouragement. The next game is very important for us to give something back.”
After the final whistle, United manager Ruben Amorim led the players on a lap of appreciation around Old Trafford. Supporters rewarded their effort with applause, reinforcing their belief in the team.
Rising Stars Shine Amid Defeat
Fernandes also praised the performances of new teammates Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who made their Premier League debuts. “They did very well,” Fernandes said. “We know the qualities they have, and they’re a big threat on the ball. It’s just the beginning, but I’m confident they will create more and contribute significantly for us this season.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, Manchester United aims to channel the lessons learned into a stronger showing in upcoming fixtures. Fernandes’ belief in his team and the support from fans underscore the resilience that could define their campaign.
