In the early hours of Sunday morning, a violent incident unfolded at the Taste of the City Lounge in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, leaving three dead and eight injured. Multiple gunmen opened fire inside the popular Caribbean restaurant, prompting a wave of panic and grief in the local community.
Details of the Shooting
The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to the scene at approximately 3:27 AM. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the deceased are three men aged 27, 35, and another whose age remains unknown. The eight wounded individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, and their conditions have not yet been disclosed. No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.
Authorities have recovered 36 shell casings from the scene at 903 Franklin Avenue. Additionally, a firearm was discovered at Eastern Parkway and is believed to have been used in the attack. Surveillance footage captured three individuals fleeing the area shortly after the shooting.
A Shocking Incident Amid Declining Crime Rates
Addressing the press, Commissioner Tisch described the incident as “terrible” but emphasized that such events are anomalies in New York City’s recent crime trends. “We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year we’ve seen on record in the city of New York,” she stated. Still, broader statistics reveal that major felonies remain elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The Taste of the City Lounge, known for its Caribbean cuisine, hookah bar, and DJs, had closed at 2 AM—just over an hour before the shooting occurred. The restaurant is located less than half a mile from the historic Brooklyn Museum, a prominent local landmark.
Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani have yet to comment on the shooting. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo expressed his condolences on social media, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Another horrific mass shooting in NYC last night, as three lives were lost and eight wounded in a senseless, deadly attack. My heart goes out to the victims and to their loved ones. Public safety is, and always has been, Job 1.” He further emphasized the need for a strong police presence, stating, “We need more officers, not less, to keep our communities safe.”
The investigation into the tragic incident continues as authorities work to identify the gunmen and determine the motive behind the attack. Community members remain shaken, with many questioning the safety of public spaces in the city.
