Billy Joel, the legendary musician and songwriter, is bidding farewell to a significant passion project as he grapples with a serious health condition. The 76-year-old artist has announced the closure of his renowned Long Island motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, this September, and plans to auction his extensive motorcycle collection later this year. This decision comes following his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological disorder that affects balance, vision, and hearing.
Joel’s Health Journey
In May, Joel disclosed his NPH diagnosis, sharing how performance-related activities had exacerbated his symptoms, leading to difficulties with hearing, vision, and balance. He has since been undergoing physical therapy and medical treatment under professional advice to step away from public performances. Consequently, all of his scheduled concerts through July 2026 have been canceled.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up and puts pressure on the brain. The condition primarily affects older adults and is often treated surgically by implanting a shunt to drain the fluid.
20th Century Cycles: A Long Island Gem
Joel launched 20th Century Cycles in 2010 in Oyster Bay, New York, with the dual purpose of restoring vintage motorcycles and sharing his personal collection with the public. The shop quickly became a destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists alike. His collection boasts over 75 motorcycles, including high-profile brands such as Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Indian, and BMW.
Among the most prized pieces in the collection is a rare 1952 Vincent Rapide, a classic model that could fetch tens of thousands of dollars at auction. Joel had a clear vision when he opened the shop, saying in a 2013 YouTube video, ‘I like the aesthetic of motorcycles from the 1930s to 1960s. I wanted to collect and showcase these designs to preserve this stylistic era.’
A Community Legacy
The shop has been more than just a personal endeavor. Joel aimed to boost Oyster Bay’s local economy and celebrate the community where he spent his formative years. In honor of his contributions, part of the street where 20th Century Cycles is located was renamed Billy Joel Way in 2023. Joel’s connection to Long Island is undeniable, even as he spends more time in South Florida.
The shop’s upcoming closure marks the end of an era, and while a date for the auction of his motorcycles has not yet been set, collectors and fans alike will eagerly await the opportunity to own a piece of Joel’s history.
Billy Joel’s Illustrious Career
Billy Joel’s career began in the 1960s, with his breakthrough album Piano Man released in 1973. Over the decades, Joel has sold over 160 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musical artists in history. His timeless hits like Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), Just the Way You Are, and Only the Good Die Young have left an indelible mark on the music industry.
As Joel transitions to this new chapter, his legacy as both a musical icon and passionate motorcycle enthusiast remains unmatched. Fans can look back on his contributions with admiration and celebrate his journey, both on and off the stage.
