Legendary musician Billy Joel, 76, has announced plans to close his Long Island-based motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, amid ongoing health challenges. The shop, a beloved destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists, is set to shut its doors in late September, with Joel’s impressive collection of over 75 motorcycles heading to auction later this year. His representative, Claire Mercuri, confirmed the news, marking the end of an era for the Oyster Bay community.
Health Struggles and the Impact on Joel’s Career
Earlier this year, Joel revealed his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological condition that affects vision, balance, and hearing. Symptoms of the condition, according to Joel, have worsened due to his recent concert performances, leading to his decision to undergo physical therapy and take a step back from performing. All scheduled shows through July 2026 have been canceled as a result.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up, putting pressure on the brain. While primarily impacting older adults, the condition is often managed through surgical intervention to drain the fluid.
The Legacy of 20th Century Cycles
Opened in 2010, 20th Century Cycles quickly gained a reputation as both a workshop and a museum, showcasing Joel’s love affair with motorcycles. The shop featured a dazzling collection spanning decades and brands, including Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Indian, and BMW. A standout piece in the collection is a rare 1952 Vincent Rapide, known to fetch tens of thousands at auction.
Joel described his inspiration for the shop in a 2013 video, saying, “I wanted a space to showcase the beauty and craft of bikes from the ’30s to the ’60s – an era that’s being forgotten. It’s about preserving a lost aesthetic.” Beyond preserving history, the shop was also a community cornerstone, designed to revitalize the local economy of Oyster Bay, where Joel spent much of his youth.
Billy Joel’s Enduring Career and Passion
With a career spanning over 50 years, Billy Joel has cemented his legacy as one of the best-selling solo artists in history, with over 160 million records sold worldwide. His rise to fame began with his 1973 hit “Piano Man,” and his 1977 album “The Stranger” launched him to superstardom with tracks like “Just The Way You Are” and “Only The Good Die Young.”
While Joel’s health has led to changes in his professional and personal life, his passion for motorcycles remains evident. Over the years, he has participated in numerous charity rides supporting causes such as 9/11 first responders and breast cancer research. Now spending more time in South Florida, Joel still maintains ties to Long Island, where his Centre Island estate is currently up for sale at $29.9 million.
The closure of 20th Century Cycles is a bittersweet moment for fans and the Oyster Bay community, who have embraced Joel’s contributions to the area. In 2023, the town even renamed part of the street where the shop stands as Billy Joel Way, a testament to his enduring legacy both as a musician and a cherished member of the community.
Although details regarding the auction of Joel’s iconic motorcycle collection have yet to be revealed, enthusiasts and collectors alike are eagerly awaiting their chance to own a piece of history from one of music’s brightest stars.
