The Battle for Retention: Beau Webster vs. Cameron Green
Australian all-rounder Beau Webster has vowed to fight for his place in the Test team as Cameron Green prepares to return to bowling ahead of the highly-anticipated Ashes series. Webster, who stepped into the roster following Green’s back surgery last November, acknowledges the uphill battle he faces to retain the number six spot as an all-rounder.
Webster debuted for Australia in January against India at the SCG following Mitchell Marsh’s poor performance. Since then, he has featured in seven Tests, showcasing his versatility with both bat and ball. Despite his contributions, he admits that he hasn’t yet delivered the crucial centuries needed to cement his place in the team.
Webster on the Challenge of Staying at the Top
“When you’re at the top level, you’re fighting to hang onto your spot,” Webster, 31, stated during a recent interview in Hobart. “Cameron Green’s return to bowling will put pressure on my number six position, but I welcome the challenge.”
Webster reflected on his experience of scoring tough runs in challenging conditions, adding, “I’ve played in tricky environments and scored some tough runs, but I haven’t managed to convert those into a hundred yet. I’m looking forward to proving myself at Shield level and earning that Ashes Test spot in Perth.”
A Look at Webster’s Performance So Far
In his 12 Test innings, Webster has demonstrated consistency, with notable performances like a 72 against South Africa at Lord’s and scores of 63 and 60 in the Caribbean. He has also contributed with the ball, claiming eight wickets at an impressive average of 23.25. Yet, the lack of a three-figure score remains a shadow over his otherwise promising record.
Now, with Cameron Green set to resume his all-round duties, selectors face “complexity” in deciding the batting lineup. According to selection chair George Bailey, Green is unlikely to reclaim the number-three batting spot he held in the West Indies series. However, his versatility as a bowler adds a unique element to the selection puzzle.
The Competition at the Top Order
Besides Webster’s struggle, fellow Tasmanian Jake Weatherald is emerging as a strong candidate for the opening position alongside veteran Usman Khawaja. Weatherald scored an impressive 906 runs in the last Shield season, boasting a strike rate of nearly 70 and three centuries.
Webster believes the timing is perfect for openers to make their mark. “It feels like a great time to be an opener in Australia. The top order is unsettled, with Uzzy nearing the end of his career. If someone can consistently score big runs, they’ll definitely be in the mix,” said Webster. Weatherald’s form places him as a strong contender to challenge Sam Konstas for the slot.
