Former Nine News Queensland Director Amanda Paterson has denied allegations that she exploited the network’s staff discount after her abrupt dismissal. The controversy surrounds an incident at Brisbane’s high-end fashion store, Carla Zampatti, where she reportedly received a significant discount months after leaving her role.
An Alleged Discount and a Denial
In May, Paterson and two friends visited the New Farm boutique, selecting items totaling $4,000, including a velvet suit and two jackets. According to reports from The Australian, sources claim Paterson requested a 50% discount. However, the former director refuted this, explaining that the store’s sales assistant recognized her from a past Carla Zampatti fashion event and voluntarily extended the discount.
“I had never been to that store before,” Paterson clarified. “The salesperson mentioned she recognized me from a previous Carla Zampatti fashion parade where I was seated at a Nine table, and then she offered the discount. I did not claim to be working at Nine.”
Paterson added, “I wish I had known earlier that particular store offered a Nine staff discount—I could have been saving money for years.”
A Career Built on Excellence
After starting her journalism career at just 19 years old, Paterson quickly rose through the ranks to become a renowned investigative journalist. Her fearless reporting led to groundbreaking stories on topics ranging from medical negligence to sports misconduct and even a murder confession that reopened a cold case and brought justice to light. Over the years, she earned three Walkley Award nominations and numerous Queensland Media Awards.
In addition to her investigative work, Paterson was instrumental in revitalizing Nine News’ Queensland bureau. Under her leadership, the team achieved consistent ratings success during one of the most competitive periods in Australian media history. She also cultivated a new generation of journalists and gained the trust of both her peers and viewers.
Disputed Dismissal from Nine News
Despite her achievements, Paterson’s tenure ended abruptly in November last year. According to reports, she was dismissed via video call by Nine’s national news director, Fiona Dear, in a meeting that lasted only minutes. This unceremonious departure came after more than 30 years with the company, which culminated in one of Nine News Queensland’s most successful ratings years in over a decade.
Currently, Kate Donnison is temporarily overseeing the role, while QTQ EP Brendan Hockings is expected to take over leadership upon returning from leave.
The Legacy of Amanda Paterson
While her departure remains a point of controversy, Paterson’s contributions to Australian journalism and Nine News’ success cannot be overstated. Her dedication to investigative reporting, commitment to mentoring young journalists, and ability to lead her team through challenging industry shifts have cemented her legacy within the media landscape.
The allegations surrounding her receipt of a Carla Zampatti discount may fuel debates, but many continue to respect her decades-long career defined by integrity, leadership, and transformative reporting.
