Alan Cumming has opened up about returning to the iconic role of Nightcrawler in Marvel’s highly anticipated film, “Avengers: Doomsday”. In an exclusive interview with People, the Emmy-winning actor described the experience as “really healing” after facing significant challenges during his first outing as the teleporting mutant in 2003’s “X2: X-Men United.”
From Rough Beginnings to Redemption
Cumming shared candid details about his less-than-stellar time filming “X2”, directed by the controversial Bryan Singer, stating it was a “miserable” experience for numerous reasons. Despite the difficulties all those years ago, Cumming fondly noted that the film itself was great. “I just came back,” he said. “It was amazing. It was actually really… in a sort of ooey, gooey way, it was really healing and really nice to go back to something that was a terrible experience when I did it the first time. A great film, great film. I love the film.”
Having turned 60 years old, Cumming remarked on his surprise at returning to superhero stunts. “I did not think I would be doing stunts or playing a superhero in my 60s,” he revealed, praising the positive atmosphere and efficiency of the new production. “Everyone was really nice, and I got it done really quickly because of my commitments to The Traitors. Most of my scenes were filmed while I was unavailable, so it worked out great.”
A Star-Studded Marvel Reunion
“Avengers: Doomsday” is shaping up to be a monumental chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Alongside Cumming’s Nightcrawler, several other veteran X-Men actors will reprise their beloved roles, including Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).
The ensemble cast also features celebrated MCU icons, such as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Danny Ramirez (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Letitia Wright (Shuri), and Winston Duke (M’Baku). The star power sets the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience for fans worldwide.
What’s Next for the Avengers?
Marvel fans won’t have to wait long for more epic battles, as the film’s sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, is already slated for release on December 17, 2027. Meanwhile, “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, marking a pivotal milestone for the franchise.
This latest installment not only promises to bring together some of Marvel’s most beloved characters but also serves as a poignant redemption for actors like Alan Cumming, who can now embrace their superhero legacies in a refreshing light.
