Abu Dhabi has announced a significant policy change that will extend maternity leave for Emirati women working in the private sector to 90 days, effective September 1, 2024. This initiative aims to support family growth and stability in the Emirati community.

Key Takeaways

  • Effective Date: The new maternity leave policy begins on September 1, 2024.
  • Eligibility: The 90-day leave applies to Emirati mothers giving birth from this date.
  • Financial Support: Eligible mothers can apply for financial support during their leave, contingent on employer approval.
  • Application Requirements: Applications must be submitted within 30 days of the baby’s birth, along with necessary documentation.

Overview of the New Maternity Leave Policy

The extended maternity leave policy is part of the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, which aims to enhance family stability and encourage Emirati families to have children. Previously, women in the private sector were entitled to 60 days of maternity leave, with 45 days fully paid and 15 days half paid. In contrast, public sector employees have always received three months of paid maternity leave.

Eligibility Criteria for Maternity Leave Support

To qualify for the Maternity Leave Support for Women in the Private Sector Programme, Emirati mothers must meet the following criteria:

  1. Application Timeline: Submit an application within the first 30 days after the baby’s birth.
  2. Documentation: Provide a valid salary certificate and complete bank account details, including the IBAN.
  3. Family Book: Present a family book issued in Abu Dhabi.
  4. Employer Approval: Obtain a no-objection certificate from the employer.

Government’s Commitment to Family Growth

Dr. Bushra Al Mulla, the director general of the Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority (SSA), emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting corporate social responsibility among private sector companies. The goal is to create a supportive environment for Emirati families, enabling them to raise children in a healthy and stable setting.

Dr. Ahmed Al Azeezi, executive director of the Social Support Applications Sector at SSA, highlighted the collaborative approach required for the successful implementation of this program. The initiative encourages private sector entities to adopt this voluntary program, aligning with the broader objectives of the Emirati Family Growth Support Program.

Conclusion

The introduction of a 90-day maternity leave for Emirati women in the private sector marks a significant step towards enhancing family welfare in Abu Dhabi. By providing additional support and financial assistance, the government aims to foster a nurturing environment for families, ultimately contributing to the growth and stability of the Emirati community.
