Nearly 80 years after being destroyed by the U.S. atomic bomb, Nagasaki’s cathedral celebrates the final piece of its restoration: a reproduction of the lost bell, now named ‘St. Kateri Bell of Hope’. The bell, restored by a group of Americans, will be hung in the Urakami Cathedral on August 9th, marking the anniversary of the bombing. The project was led by James Nolan Jr., a sociology professor inspired by the cathedral’s history and the local Catholic followers’ resilience. He hopes the bell symbolizes unity and fosters hope and peace in a divided world. Nolan’s book ‘Atomic Doctors’ sheds light on the moral dilemmas faced by medical professionals involved in the Manhattan Project.
