The Geological Survey of India (GSI) marked the first anniversary of its National Landslide Forecasting Centre (NLFC) with a celebratory event, highlighting advancements in early warning systems. This event commemorated a year of successful operations in enhancing landslide preparedness in regions like Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and the Nilgiris. From July 20 onwards, residents and tourists will receive real-time landslide forecast bulletins, aiming to mitigate the impact of landslides during the monsoon season. The NLFC, a pivotal initiative in India’s landslide risk reduction efforts, leverages cutting-edge technology and real-time data for accurate forecasting. The Centre plans to expand its coverage nationwide by 2030 and recently launched the Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) in 21 districts across eight states. To celebrate the milestone, a national-level workshop will convene experts from various institutions to discuss the future of landslide forecasting and disaster preparedness in India.
