Yoga has long been recognized for its emphasis on breathwork, and for good reason. Our breath is the foundation of our physical and mental well-being, and conscious breathing can have a profound impact on our overall health. By incorporating yoga breathwork into my Pilates practice, I’ve noticed significant improvements in my flexibility, balance, and overall physical awareness. But what exactly is breathwork, and how can it benefit our fitness routine?

Breathwork refers to the conscious practice of controlling and manipulating our breath to achieve a specific state of mind or physical response. In yoga, breathwork is used to prepare the body for physical postures, calm the mind, and access deeper states of relaxation. Integrating Breathwork into Pilates

So, how can we integrate breathwork from yoga into our Pilates practice? Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Use ujjayi breathing: Also known as the ‘ocean breath’, ujjayi breathing involves breathing in and out through the nose, with the glottis (the space between the vocal cords) slightly closed. This type of breathing can help to slow down your heart rate and promote relaxation.
  • Practice box breathing: Box breathing involves breathing in for a count of four, holding for a count of four, exhaling for a count of four, and holding again for a count of four. This type of breathing can help to calm the nervous system and promote focus and concentration.

The PNS counters the effects of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which is responsible for our ‘fight or flight’ response. By activating the PNS through conscious breathing, we can reduce our stress levels, improve our mood, and enhance our overall sense of well-being.

In addition to its effects on our nervous system, breathwork can also have a profound impact on our physical performance. By regulating our breathing, we can improve our endurance, increase our strength, and enhance our flexibility. This is because breathing stimulates the release of certain hormones, such as oxytocin and dopamine, which play a crucial role in our physical and emotional response to exercise.
