Google’s March 2024 Core Update: The Definitive Guide for AI Content Creators

MyShine August 3, 2026 6 minutes read

Google announced the rollout of its March 2024 Core Update on March 5, 2024, describing it as a “more complex update than our usual core updates” aimed at reducing low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 40%. This update marks a significant escalation in the search engine’s fight against content created primarily for search engine ranking, rather than for people.

The March 2024 update represents a paradigm shift, combining a core ranking algorithm update with a major overhaul of Google’s spam policies. For the first time, Google is explicitly targeting and automating the demotion of large-scale, low-value content, including content generated by AI to manipulate search rankings. The company stated the update will take approximately one month to complete its rollout.

What the March 2024 Core Update Actually Changes

The March 2024 Core Update is not a single tweak but a multi-pronged assault on what Google deems poor-quality search results. Its components are designed to work in tandem to identify and devalue content that fails to provide a satisfying user experience.

First, the core ranking algorithm itself has been refined with new and improved signals. Google’s systems are now better at understanding if webpages are “unhelpful, have a poor user experience, or feel like they were created for search engines instead of people.” This means content that is overly generic, lacks depth, or simply rehashes information from other sources without adding significant value is at high risk of losing visibility.

Second, and most critically, Google updated its Spam Policies to directly address three key areas:

  1. Scaled Content Abuse: This policy has been broadened beyond just automatically generated content to include any content produced at scale to manipulate search rankings, regardless of the tools used. This explicitly includes human-generated content farms and mass-produced AI content created with the primary goal of ranking.
  2. Site Reputation Abuse: Sometimes called “parasite SEO,” this occurs when a reputable website hosts low-quality, third-party content designed to capitalize on the site’s strong ranking signals. For example, a respected educational site hosting payday loan reviews. Google will now classify such content as spam and may take action against the entire host site if the abuse is egregious.
  3. Expired Domain Abuse: This targets the practice of buying old, expired domains with existing authority and repurposing them entirely to host low-quality content, misleading users who expect the old site’s content. Google will now devalue such repurposed domains.

Google confirmed it will use both automated systems and human review to enforce these updated spam policies, with penalties potentially affecting an entire site’s search presence.

Immediate Impact for AI-Powered Content Operations

For professionals using AI in their content workflows, the March 2024 update necessitates an immediate strategic pivot. The era of scaling thin, templated content with AI is officially over. The update’s 40% reduction target for low-quality content signals Google’s confidence in its new classifiers.

Early analysis from SEO data providers like Semrush and Sistrix shows volatility spikes of 85-90% in search rankings across numerous sectors, particularly in YMYL (Your Money Your Life) niches like health, finance, and legal advice, as well as in affiliate-heavy industries like e-commerce and product reviews. Sites relying on large volumes of AI-generated “answer” content for informational queries are seeing the most dramatic drops.

The key distinction Google is making—and that creators must internalize—is between AI-assisted content and AI-generated spam. Using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Jasper for research, ideation, drafting, or editing is not the target. The target is the systematic, scaled production of content where the AI is the primary author and human oversight is minimal or non-existent, created with the sole intent of capturing search traffic.

This creates a clear risk profile: Websites with hundreds or thousands of pages published in a short timeframe, exhibiting similar structures, lacking unique insights, and failing to demonstrate real expertise or first-hand experience are now in Google’s crosshairs. The automation of spam detection means these patterns are easier than ever for Google to identify at scale.

A Practical Action Plan for AI Content Creators Post-Update

Surviving and thriving after the March 2024 update requires moving from a quantity-focused to a quality-focused mindset. Here is a concrete, step-by-step action plan:

  1. Conduct a “Helpfulness” Audit: Manually review your top-traffic pages and most recently published AI-assisted content. For each piece, ask: Does this provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis? Does it provide a substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic? Does it provide insightful analysis or interesting information beyond the obvious? If the answer is “no,” prioritize those pages for significant improvement or removal.
  2. Implement a Rigorous Human-AI Hybrid Workflow: Recalibrate your process to ensure AI is a tool, not the author. A compliant workflow should look like this:
    • Human-Led Strategy & Briefing: A human defines the topic, target audience, key questions to answer, and unique angle based on expertise or original data.
    • AI-Assisted Research & Drafting: Use AI to gather information, suggest outlines, or produce a rough first draft.
    • Human Expertise Infusion: A subject matter expert must heavily edit the draft, adding personal experience, unique examples, proprietary data, critical analysis, and authoritative citations.
    • Human Final Review & Publishing: A final human review ensures the content meets EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) standards, has a distinct voice, and aligns with brand values before publication.
  3. Enhance EEAT Signals Proactively: Make expertise transparent. Add detailed author bios with credentials and links to professional profiles. Use the “Author” schema markup. For commercial content, clearly disclose affiliations. Publish original research, case studies, or data visualizations that demonstrate first-hand knowledge. Encourage and showcase genuine user reviews.
  4. Prune or Improve Low-Value Content: Use Google Search Console to identify pages that have lost traffic since early March. For pages with potential, significantly expand and update them with deeper insights. For thin, duplicative, or outdated pages with no traffic, use a 410 status code (Gone) or a “noindex” tag to remove them from Google’s index, which can improve the overall perceived quality of your site.
  5. Double-Down on People-First Content Formats: Shift resources toward content types that inherently demonstrate expertise and satisfy user intent, such as detailed tutorials with step-by-step screenshots, product comparisons based on actual testing, interviews with industry experts, and data-driven reports or surveys you conduct yourself.

The Future of AI Content in Search

The March 2024 Core Update is not the end of AI in content creation; it is the end of its naive and exploitative phase. Google’s message is unequivocal: the utility of content to the searcher is the paramount ranking factor. Automation used to create a poor user experience will be penalized, while automation used to enhance a helpful, expert-driven process is not only safe but encouraged for efficiency.

Forward-looking content strategists will view this as a necessary correction. The update clears the competitive landscape of the lowest-quality actors, creating more opportunity for brands and creators who invest in genuine expertise and user satisfaction. The winning formula is now clear: combine human expertise, strategic oversight, and unique perspective with the productivity gains of AI tools. The future belongs to creators who use AI to amplify their knowledge, not replace it.
