Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its European Sovereign Cloud, a robust and secure cloud offering designed to address increasing concerns around data sovereignty and security regulations in Europe. This strategic move reinforces AWS’s commitment to providing localized, secure, and reliable cloud infrastructure to European businesses.
A Standalone Cloud Infrastructure
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud operates independently with physically and legally separate infrastructure from its U.S. operations. The primary data center is based in Brandenburg, Germany, with plans for expansion into Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal. AWS’s design ensures the cloud infrastructure remains operational even during disruptions to Europe’s connectivity with the U.S., addressing a critical concern for businesses relying on uninterrupted access.
Designed to Comply with EU Data Security Standards
The cloud is managed by a team of European Union (EU) citizens, addressing data handling and regulatory concerns stemming from the U.S. Cloud Act. All employees with access to the system are EU residents, and AWS enforces stringent controls and legal safeguards to meet European standards for sensitive data.
“This solution ensures compliance with EU data protection laws while providing advanced tools for innovation and growth,” stated Michael Hanisch, CTO of AWS Germany.
Investment and Expansion Plans
AWS has committed to investing over €7.8 billion into the European Sovereign Cloud through 2040, with Brandenburg marking the first phase of this ambitious project. The upcoming expansions to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal emphasize AWS’s dedication to meeting the region’s high standards for data security and infrastructure resilience. Specific timelines for these expansions have not yet been announced.
Competition in a Growing Market
The European cloud market is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly with AWS competing against Microsoft and Google. Microsoft has expanded its regional facilities to store customer data exclusively in Europe when requested, and Google has committed a €5.5 billion investment into its German data centers. Together, AWS, Microsoft, and Google currently control 70% of Europe’s cloud computing market, according to Synergy Research Group.
Addressing Market and Regulatory Demands
European regulators continue to scrutinize Big Tech under the Digital Markets Act, which seeks to oversee market power and enforce fair competition. AWS’s sovereign cloud addresses these regulatory concerns while aiming to capture a significant share of the European market.

The Future of Data Sovereignty
In today’s digital landscape, compliance with regional data laws and protection mechanisms has become a non-negotiable for businesses. AWS’s European Sovereign Cloud is a monumental step toward providing businesses with tools that are not only innovative but also aligned with strict regulatory standards. By investing heavily in Europe’s infrastructure and maintaining complete physical and logical separation from non-European servers, AWS has placed itself as a trusted ally for enterprises prioritizing data security.
