Bhutan Commits $1 Billion in Bitcoin to Build Gelephu Mindfulness City
In an ambitious move that highlights Bhutan’s forward-thinking approach, the Kingdom has recently pledged up to 10,000 Bitcoin—valued at approximately $1 billion—to fund the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). This remarkable initiative is aimed at fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and prioritizing sustainability within a blockchain-inspired ecosystem.
A Vision Rooted in Community and Innovation
During his National Day Address, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck emphasized the importance of this commitment. “As your King, I must ensure that every Bhutanese is a custodian, stakeholder, and beneficiary of GMC,” His Majesty stated. By enacting this initiative, Bhutan aims to empower its citizens, particularly its youth, while fortifying its national resilience.
The project introduces an innovative land policy where Bhutanese citizens will become shareholders in the mindfulness city. “Think of GMC as a company and landowners as its shareholders,” explained His Majesty, ensuring equitable benefits across all regions, since most land in Bhutan is state-owned.
Bitcoin as a Long-term Digital Asset Reserved for Growth
Rather than selling the Kingdom’s digital assets, Bhutan plans to manage its Bitcoin holdings through strategic approaches, including collateralization and risk-managed yield strategies. This is meant to uphold long-term value while generating consistent growth for the initiative.
Jigdrel Singay, board director at GMC, emphasized, “The 10,000 BTC will be held explicitly for GMC’s benefit… It represents both a reserve delegation and a proactive effort to generate yields from these BTC for the city’s development.” The move solidifies Bhutan’s position as a leader in integrating blockchain in national projects.
A Milestone in Sovereign Blockchain Adoption
Bhutan’s embrace of blockchain technology is not new. The Kingdom has a history of utilizing hydropower to mine Bitcoin and currently holds 5,984 BTC worth over $522 million, ranking seventh globally among sovereign Bitcoin holders. In a span of just a year, Bhutan has also:
- Designated Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB as strategic reserves.
- Partnered with Binance Pay to enable crypto payments in tourism.
- Launched TER, a gold-backed digital token on Solana, to reinforce its commitment to blockchain-powered innovation.
