On a radiant, cloudless day in Brisbane, renowned choreographer Benjamin Millepied captured the essence of nature with his Fujifilm camera, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Having flown in from Paris, this is Millepied’s inaugural visit to the River City. Although he has fond memories of Australia from his year in Sydney directing the film Carmen, which featured Paul Mescal and Melissa Carrera, he expresses a strong desire to forge a deeper connection with this diverse country.
World Premiere at the Brisbane Festival
This year’s Brisbane Festival proudly hosts Millepied, a testament to outgoing artistic director Louise Bezzina’s vision. Millepied is set to present a unique experience, Gems, a compilation of three short dance pieces inspired by precious gemstones—rubies, diamonds, and emeralds—developed in collaboration with luxury jewelry brand Van Cleef & Arpels.
While reminiscent of George Balanchine’s celebrated Jewels, Millepied insists that his work stands alone. He is currently contemplating a name change for the trilogy to Reflections ahead of its performance in Los Angeles this October, emphasizing that his artistic journey is distinct and personal.
A Journey Through Dance
Millepied’s career spans over 55 projects and various influential roles, including his tenure with the New York City Ballet and his choreography for the Oscar-winning film Black Swan. This triumph catapulted not only his career but also his personal life into the public eye, as he married actress Natalie Portman, with whom he shares two children.
The experience of curating Gems represents a crucial moment for Millepied, allowing him to revisit earlier works and evolve them with newfound freedom and creativity. The third segment, On the Other Side, is practically a premiere in Brisbane, showcasing his desire to remain innovative.
Contemporary Dance and Digital Influences
Millepied also offers insights into the current landscape of dance. He highlights how technology, particularly smartphones, compromises the authenticity and depth of contemporary choreography. He longs for a return to more intricate and poetic expressions within the art form.
Gems will be performed at the Playhouse, QPAC, from September 4-7. For those inspired by the artistic intersection of dance and luxury, elevate your own style with the elegance of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry, available here.
