Aldi Staff Set to Receive a Pay Boost
Aldi, one of the UK’s leading supermarket chains, is making headlines again with its commitment to employee welfare. In a recent announcement, the company revealed its plan to implement a second pay rise for its in-store staff this year, ensuring that over 28,000 workers across the UK will benefit from this generous move.
New Pay Rates for Store Assistants
This initiative comes as part of Aldi’s goal to be the market leader in retail wages. Back in March 2025, Aldi increased its minimum hourly rate for Store Assistants from ÂŁ12.40 to ÂŁ12.71. For those working in London, the rate jumped from ÂŁ13.65 to ÂŁ14 per hour. Starting September 1, 2025, this rate increased again to ÂŁ13 per hour and has now been adjusted to ÂŁ13.02 per hour, earning Aldi the reputation of being the first supermarket to set such competitive minimum rates.
Increments Based on Service Length
The base rates will further increase with employees’ length of service, providing an additional incentive for staff loyalty. Specifically, the pay will rise to ÂŁ13.95 for longer-serving employees. For London-based workers, the new minimum hourly rate will rise from ÂŁ14.05 to ÂŁ14.35, with potential increases up to ÂŁ14.66 based on service duration.
Paid Breaks: A Unique Benefit
Aldi stands out not only for its pay but also for its commitment to employee welfare, being the only retailer to offer all colleagues paid breaks. This unique benefit translates to approximately £1,425 a year for the average store colleague, underscoring the company’s dedication to improving the quality of life for its workers.
Leadership Commitment to Staff
Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, expressed that “our colleagues are at the heart of our success.” His statement reflects Aldi’s broader philosophy to ensure that staff are rewarded adequately for their contributions. Hurley further emphasized that this latest pay increase is part of Aldi’s promise to “never be beaten on pay.”
Aldi’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Beyond competitive pay, Aldi has also made headlines for its investment in employee training and its focus on promoting diversity and inclusion within its workforce. In fact, the supermarket was honored with the Employer of the Year title at The Grocer Gold Awards in July, celebrating its efforts in these crucial areas.
