The ocean has an undeniable and timeless allure, a source of inspiration and reflection for so many. For those who have spent their lives at sea or simply dreamt of it, a final farewell amidst the waves can be a deeply meaningful and fitting tribute. This is the journey I embarked on seven years after the passing of my husband, John. With the help of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, I found the perfect way to honor his life and love for the sea.
Finding the Perfect Farewell
John, my husband of 53 years, was always captivated by the call of the ocean. From his early days in Amsterdam crafting wooden toys from his grandfather’s ship carpenter’s chest, to his adventures as a young sailor and shipbuilder, the sea was his element. Even when age and illness slowed him down, his passion endured through handcrafting model boats and fishing trips. When he passed in 2018, I knew his final journey had to take place where he felt most at home – at sea.
After years of soul-searching, I discovered that the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard provides memorial services to scatter ashes at sea. John had always regarded the Coast Guard as the silent protectors of the ocean, and this newfound knowledge gave me peace. Their dedicated work saving lives and ensuring the safety of seafarers was a cause he admired deeply, so entrusting them with his farewell felt natural.
The Ceremony at Sea
On a calm and sunny morning, the Mooloolaba Rotary Rescue, a bright yellow vessel operated by the QF6 Mooloolaba Coast Guard, became the setting for John’s memorial. The crew, led by Commander Paul Heath and Chaplain Sue Clarke, welcomed me on board. They guided me through safety protocols and ensured the day would be as smooth as the waters ahead.
John’s ashes rested in a biodegradable box adorned with photos of the beautiful yachts he had built. One fitting epitaph graced the top: “Cosmos Mariner, Destination Unknown.” Beside it was a basket filled with yellow rose petals, ready to accompany him on his final voyage.
As the vessel left the harbor, flags were respectfully lowered to half-mast – a centuries-old naval tradition symbolizing mourning and respect. Our destination was just offshore from Alexandra Headland, a serene spot to lay him to rest. I delivered a heartfelt eulogy recounting John’s unwavering love for the sea, his craftsmanship, and his adventurous spirit. To my surprise, the crew gathered around, engaged and moved by his story. It was a moment of shared humanity and connection that I will never forget.
With gentle care, we lowered his ashes into the water. Yellow petals followed, creating a serene drift of color amidst the waves. The vessel circled slowly, a gesture of reverence, before the flags were raised once more. John was finally free – forever at home in the oceans he loved.
The Angels of the Ocean
The kindness and professionalism of the Coast Guard volunteers left a lasting impression on me. These “angels of the sea” dedicate countless hours to keeping maritime communities safe, and their memorial services are no exception. Funded entirely by donations, these heartfelt ceremonies highlight their commitment to providing comfort and support when it matters most.
If you or a loved one are considering a similar service, the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard is an exceptional choice. Their thoughtful approach ensures the day is one of joy, peace, and celebration rather than sadness. In Loving Memory
As I look back on the memorial, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude. The generous gestures from the Coast Guard, including a photo record of the ceremony, allowed me to share this moment with family and friends. For those saying goodbye to someone who loved the ocean, I can say with confidence that this experience brings a sense of closure and healing. It’s a gift of kindness and reverence that lets our loved ones live on in the waves and winds of the sea.
To honor John’s memory, I’ve also discovered a symbolic way to keep his connection to the ocean alive – the Aqua Biodegradable Urn by Passages International. Made from sustainable materials, this urn is designed to float briefly before sinking and dispersing naturally into the currents. It’s perfect for a serene, eco-friendly tribute. John’s voyage is complete, and I am at peace knowing he is where he belongs – free to roam the seas he so deeply loved.
