Sadiq Khan Reflects on Labour’s Challenges in First Year of Power
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has candidly shared his perspective on the Labour Party’s first year back in government after over a decade out of power. However, Labour has a great team and enough time left on the clock to stand up for the voters who lent us their trust.”
The London Mayor used a football analogy for Labour’s current situation, comparing it to being ‘two-nil down’ with plenty of playing time still remaining. With steady leadership, he believes the party has the ability to ‘win this game.’
Labour’s Learning Curve
An important aspect, according to Khan, is that Labour has had to re-learn what it means to run government. After more than a decade out of power, he explained, the party lost institutional knowledge about managing the machinery of governance. This re-adjustment period, he believes, has contributed to some of the slower progress.
Khan also highlighted several policy wins that Labour has achieved, including stronger protections for renters and workers, improved energy policy, and public investments. However, he stressed that the party must demonstrate greater effectiveness to meet voter expectations.
