The Premier League season debut for Manchester United ended in drama as the controversial use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) stirred debates among fans and analysts alike. Arsenal’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, marked by Riccardo Calafiori’s goal, was overshadowed by claims of VAR failure, with former referee Mark Clattenburg taking center stage in the commentary.
Was Arsenal’s Goal Fair?
According to ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, Arsenal’s goal shouldn’t have been allowed to stand. He pointed out that William Saliba’s interference with Mason Mount and Altay Bayindir during a crucial moment in the penalty box was overlooked by the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL). “In slow motion, it’s clear that Mount’s shirt was being pulled, while Bayindir was impeded during a key aerial challenge,” Clattenburg explained.
This incident raised fresh concerns about the effectiveness of VAR, which is meant to minimize errors in major decisions like goals, penalties, and red cards. Despite these safeguards, some argue that VAR failed to apply consistent standards, leading to incorrect verdicts.
PGMOL’s Push for Stricter Penalties
PGMOL chief Howard Webb recently emphasized the need for a crackdown on holding offenses in the penalty area. “We aim to eliminate clear actions that prevent players from reaching the ball. Those situations will be penalized more this season,” Webb said. This stricter approach aims to increase fairness but raises questions on how effectively such policies are enforced.
Manchester United’s Encouraging Start
Despite the defeat, United showed noticeable improvements in their attacking gameplay. Players like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha created an impressive number of opportunities against Arsenal, outperforming their stats from previous matches last season. Manager Ruben Amorim will look to capitalize on this momentum in their upcoming clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
