Stepping into the shoes of a television legend can be daunting, but actor Daniel Casey is up for the challenge. Known for his role as DS Gavin Troy in the first six seasons of Midsomer Murders, Casey is set to take on the iconic role of DCI Tom Barnaby in a new stage adaptation of Caroline Graham’s beloved book, The Killings at Badger’s Drift.
Filling John Nettles’ Shoes
Daniel Casey recently shared his thoughts on the transition during an interview on BBC Breakfast, describing it as “amazing” yet “quite daunting.” He spoke highly of John Nettles, who originated the character of Tom Barnaby in the popular ITV series, saying, “I learned at the feet of the master.” Nettles played the role from 1997 to 2011, leaving an indelible mark on British crime television.
Casey explained that while he plans to remain faithful to the original character, his portrayal will still bring a personal touch: “The lines are the lines, the character is the character. But it will be my voice and my version.” Fans of the series will be excited to see how he reimagines the legendary detective in this theatrical adaptation.
A New Stage Adventure
Taking on a stage adaptation of such a well-known world poses its own unique challenges. Casey remarked, “Midsomer has always had that theatricality. Those larger-than-life characters from the TV series translate beautifully to the stage.” The tour promises to offer fans a fresh yet familiar perspective on the mystery-filled, quirky world of Midsomer.
For Casey, this is a homecoming of sorts. Reflecting on his return to the franchise, he said, “It’s lovely to come back. I never thought I’d revisit this amazing, weird, wonderful world again.”
Taking Bold Career Risks
Daniel Casey left Midsomer Murders in 2003 at the age of 30, deciding to take a leap of faith and explore new career opportunities. Inspired by a rugby commentator’s words – “The only risk in life is never to take a risk” – Casey made what he describes as a relatively easy decision to move on, and he hasn’t looked back since. “It’s been brilliant. I think you want a varied career,” he said.
