UK Weather Shifts as Heavy and Thundery Showers Predicted
The Met Office has forecast a dramatic change in weather, warning of heavy and thundery showers across the UK. This announcement follows a week marked by the fourth heatwave of 2025, where temperatures soared past 30°C in parts of the country.
While the heatwave brought sunny skies over recent days, the weekend saw temperatures drop slightly, offering a cooler respite. Although the heatwave has ended, most areas of the UK can still expect pleasant temperatures in the 20°C range. However, the arrival of thundery showers signals more “changeable” conditions ahead.
Tonight’s Forecast: Cloudy with Thundery Showers in the Southwest
The forecast for Monday evening reads: “A few showers continuing to affect the southwest overnight, perhaps turning thundery at times. Otherwise, North Sea cloud likely expanding inland, with occasional drizzle in some places.”
On social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the Met Office said that Monday morning started “quite cloudy for most of us, perhaps with the odd spot of drizzle in the east. However, sunnier skies will likely appear in some western areas, gradually brightening up elsewhere. Showers are expected in the far southwest, which could be heavy and thundery.”
Long-Range Weather Predictions: A Changeable End of August
Looking ahead, the long-range forecast between August 22 and August 31 warns of increasingly “changeable” weather, influenced by Storm Erin. According to the Met Office, while high-pressure systems may bring initially fine and dry conditions, cooler weather is expected due to a northerly flow. This will be followed by the approach of frontal systems from the Atlantic, paving the way for more uncertain and varied weather as the month progresses.
In addition, the development of a deep low-pressure area in the North Atlantic, linked to Hurricane Erin, poses the chance of wetter and windier weather. “The changeable period will likely persist into the end of the month – especially in northern and western regions,” the Met Office states, cautioning that the evolution of these conditions is subject to significant uncertainty.
