NSW Surf Life Saving has temporarily closed Cabarita Beach at Norries Headland this Monday morning following a harrowing shark attack. A local surfer’s board suffered a large shark bite, leaving authorities to secure the area, though fortunately, the surfer was unharmed.
Shark Attack Sparks Beach Closure
Tweed Shire Council confirmed the beach closure in a statement, ensuring public safety as officials assessed the situation. Photos shared on social media reveal a dramatic bite mark carved out of the surfboard. Surveillance footage captured the unsettling moment of commotion in the water just after 7:30 AM.
Online Support and Reactions
American surfing legend Kelly Slater chimed in on the incident via Instagram, commenting: “Incredible he’s okay. Great example of why I fear open ocean swimming so much. Surfboards have saved quite a few surfers with that tiny barrier.” His comment highlights the risks surfers take in shark-prone areas and the protective nature of surfboards in such instances.
Second Shark-Related Incident in Two Months
This marks the second shark incident at Cabarita Beach in under two months. Less than eight weeks ago, a young boy was also attacked while swimming in the same area. Surf Life Saving NSW continues to survey the coastline with drone technology to assess additional risks.
Authorities’ Response
According to a Surf Life Saving NSW spokesperson, safety measures were implemented promptly. “Just after 8 AM this morning, our state operations center was alerted to this shark-related incident. Lifeguards were immediately dispatched, and the beach was closed to prevent further risks,” the organization stated.
For now, authorities urge residents and visitors to monitor updates and avoid swimming at this location until deemed safe. As shark encounters rise, safety protocols and advanced surveillance become critical for safeguarding the public.
