A local prankster, often referred to as the ‘human bollard,’ has once again gained notoriety in Swansea for his unusual form of protest, which involves blocking busy streets while remaining completely silent with authorities. David Hampson, a 51-year-old troublemaker, has been likened to the character Chief from the popular movie ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ as he chooses when and who to speak to, despite pretending to be mute.
Who Is David Hampson?
David Hampson is no ordinary protester. The Swansea resident has spent the better part of the last decade challenging authority in a peculiar way—by standing in the middle of busy roads and refusing to speak after being arrested. He frequently targets the area outside Swansea Central police station and the nearby magistrates court, causing disruption to traffic and earning himself the nickname “human bollard.”
Despite his silent treatment toward law enforcement and legal teams, prison officers have confirmed that Hampson speaks when it suits him, shattering any claims of actual muteness. According to his former neighbor John Davies, Hampson’s silence is purely intentional. “He doesn’t like authority,” Davies remarked. “He chooses when to speak and who to speak to.”
A Serial Offender
Hampson’s antics have earned him numerous convictions—12 counts of highway obstruction in the past 10 years alone. His latest offense occurred on June 19, when he blocked De La Beche Street, creating chaos in the heart of Swansea. Arrested on the spot, Hampson repeated his well-known tactics by refusing to speak at the police station or in court. As a result, the court entered a ‘not guilty’ plea on his behalf, and he was eventually convicted at trial.
This repeat offense came just 28 days after he had completed a six-month sentence for the same crime at the exact same location. During both cases, jurors had to decide whether Hampson was ‘mute of malice’—choosing not to speak—or ‘mute by visitation of God’—incapable of speaking due to a medical or other condition. Evidence from prison staff confirmed the former, leading to his conviction for obstructing the road and breaching a criminal behavior order.
Defying Authority
Hampson’s defiance isn’t limited to public protests. According to locals, he has a history of disruptive behavior. One former neighbor shared an anecdote of Hampson stealing the keys to a disability scooter, leaving the owner stranded in the rain. “He thought it was hilarious,” the neighbor commented. “He’s a prankster who thrives on annoying people.”
Additionally, after being evicted from his council flat eight years ago, Hampson reportedly broke back into the boarded-up property multiple times, forcing officials to reinforce the windows and doors with metal sheets. According to the current occupant of the flat, debt collectors and unpaid bills addressed to Hampson were a constant nuisance.
A Reputation That Spreads
Despite his disruptive behavior, Hampson’s reputation as a ‘human bollard’ continues to grow. Some see his actions as minor pranks, while others view them as deliberate disruptions to public order. What’s clear is that his silence has become his most powerful tactic—perplexing authorities and garnering attention both locally and online.
The Swansea Magistrates Court noted that Hampson has shown no intention of changing his behavior, making it likely that he will continue his protests—and silence—well into the future.
David Hampson’s stunts not only draw attention but ignite conversations about the nature of protests, authority, and the boundaries of personal freedom. While some see him as a nuisance, others argue that his unusual methods are a form of silent civil disobedience. Regardless of perspective, his actions have left an indelible mark on his local community.
