A tragic incident unfolded in Prescot, Merseyside, as a father of two, Mark Anthony Kirby, passed away after allegedly being bitten by one of his pet spiders. The 34-year-old had purchased the venomous spiders online just weeks before his untimely death on August 2.
An Unusual Obsession
According to his ex-partner of 16 years, Kayleigh Gill, Mark had developed an unusual fascination with spiders despite having previously been terrified of insects. ‘He was obsessed,’ Kayleigh explained to the Liverpool Echo. ‘I think he bought them because he lived alone, even though he was once terrified of insects.’
Flu-Like Symptoms Ignored
In the days leading up to his death, Mark began experiencing severe flu-like symptoms, including a fluctuating temperature and aching limbs. Despite Kayleigh urging him to visit the hospital, he dismissed the symptoms. On August 2, Mark called his sister-in-law, Kath, stating he could not breathe properly. Shortly after her arrival at his flat, Mark collapsed and passed away despite paramedics’ efforts to save him.
Cause of Death Still Unknown
A post-mortem examination has so far been inconclusive, and while no definitive cause of death has been determined, Kayleigh believes the symptoms point to a possible spider bite. Mark had previously mentioned being bitten by one of his spiders but did not seek medical attention.
A Father Remembered
Paying tribute to Mark, Kayleigh described him as ‘funny, caring, outgoing, and such a people person.’ She added, ‘He was a brilliant dad to our two children and always the life and soul of the party.’
Mark leaves behind two children: his 18-year-old son Nathan-Mark and 17-year-old daughter Kimmy-Louise. The tragedy has also sparked concerns about the need for stricter regulations on owning venomous spiders, with Kayleigh advocating for licensing requirements.
The Debate Over Exotic Pets
The incident raises questions about the safety of purchasing venomous pets online and the lack of oversight in such transactions. Mark’s story serves as a reminder of the potential risks involved in owning exotic animals without proper precautions.
