A public shooting in Sydney’s inner-west has left one man dead and another critically injured, reigniting concerns about gang-related violence in the area. The dramatic incident unfolded outside The Harold, a popular pub in Forest Lodge, on Sunday evening.
Tragic Incident in Sydney’s Inner-West
Authorities report that up to 15 gunshots were heard near the historic venue around 6:35 PM. The victims, later identified as Maradona Yalda, 31, and Gilbert Shino, 39, were ambushed as they walked toward their car parked approximately 100 meters away from the pub. While Yalda, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, remains in stable condition following emergency hospital treatment, Shino tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite efforts by paramedics and an off-duty doctor nearby.
Victims and Gang Affiliations
Yalda, according to police sources, had recently returned to Australia just days before the shooting, despite reportedly being aware of a contract on his life. He is believed to have ties to the Assyrian street gang DLASTHR, as well as to former Comanchero bikie member Andre Kallita. However, authorities emphasize that there is no evidence of any recent wrongdoing by Yalda.
Shino, Yalda’s 39-year-old friend, was fatally injured in the attack. Witness reports claim Shino fell to the ground after being struck by gunfire, leading to chaotic scenes outside the gastropub as concerned patrons and neighbors tried to assist.
Multiple Motives Under Investigation
As of Monday, the gunmen remain at large, prompting a large-scale police investigation. According to Leichhardt Police Area Commander Superintendent Alf Sergi, detectives are exploring several angles, including the possibility of an internal feud among gang members or connections to a recent firebombing in Sydney’s western suburbs. The incident is being investigated with support from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
“It seems that the two individuals were ambushed as they approached their car,” said Superintendent Sergi during an interview on radio station 2GB. “Multiple gunshots were fired, and unfortunately, we couldn’t save one of the victims.”
Chaos at a Busy Local Pub
Witnesses described harrowing scenes as shots rang out while the pub was busy with locals enjoying Sunday dinners. Staff locked guests inside, with many patrons taking cover under tables during the attack. Local residents were advised to remain indoors, and the pub was later safely evacuated by authorities.
A crime scene has been established near the Ross Street venue, which originally opened in 1880. Several vehicles in the vicinity were also struck by stray bullets during the shooting. Forensic teams are continuing to gather evidence, and statements are being taken from witnesses.
Community Concerns Escalate
Incidents like this underscore growing community concerns about organized crime and public safety in suburban Sydney. With the culprits still on the run, residents in Forest Lodge and surrounding suburbs are being urged to remain vigilant while the investigation unfolds. Police request anyone with information to come forward to assist their inquiries and ensure justice for the victims.
