Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly agreed to allow significant U.S. and European security guarantees for Ukraine during a summit with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. The discussion marks a pivotal moment in peace negotiations concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Special U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff revealed that during the high-stakes meeting, Putin agreed to a security framework for Ukraine that mirrors NATO’s Article 5—a collective defense clause where an attack on one member constitutes an attack on all. Speaking to CNN’s State of the Union, Witkoff described the breakthrough as a ‘gamechanger.’
“For the first time, Russia agreed that the United States and European allies could offer Ukraine robust, Article 5-like security guarantees,” Witkoff explained. “It’s a step forward in bypassing NATO accession concerns that Russia has long opposed.”

Sources indicate that Putin agreed to make unspecified concessions on five key Ukrainian regions central to the war. European Union Council President Antonio Costa echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for transatlantic unity. He remarked, “If no ceasefire is agreed, the EU and the U.S. must increase pressure on Russia.”
