London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed his willingness to meet former US President Donald Trump, despite criticizing his rhetoric and policies. Speaking at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe during the Political Party show with comedian Matt Forde, Khan highlighted his concerns about Trump’s comments on minorities and their potential impact on societal tensions.
Khan’s Critique of Trump’s Leadership
The Labour politician dismissed Trump’s past personal insults, including calling Khan a “nasty person” who has “done a terrible job.” Khan described these remarks as “water off a duck’s back,” but he emphasized the broader issues at stake. According to him, Trump’s statements about Muslims, women, and other minority groups risk bringing fringe views into the mainstream and could inadvertently radicalize individuals.
Khan stated, “When President Trump says some of the things he does, it brings from the periphery to the mainstream views that are potentially dangerous. He inadvertently—I’m not going to suggest he does it deliberately—could be radicalizing people.”
Promoting London’s Diversity
Despite his criticisms, Khan highlighted London’s diversity as one of its greatest strengths. He noted that more Americans have applied for British citizenship and moved to London during Trump’s tenure, attributing this to the values and cultural inclusiveness of the capital city.
Khan remarked, “It is possible to be proud to be a Westerner and proud to be Muslim, proud to be British and of Pakistani origin, and still be a law-abiding citizen. Our diversity makes us stronger, not weaker.”
Willingness to Collaborate
The mayor underscored his openness to dialogue, expressing his desire to show Trump that the actions of a small minority of extremists do not represent the global Muslim community. “If there were an opportunity to meet President Trump, I would be more than happy to do so,” Khan stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding and collaboration in addressing global challenges.
