Star Wars icon Mark Hamill has revealed that he considered leaving the United States following the presidency of Donald Trump. The 73-year-old actor, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker, recently shared his thoughts with The Times, stating that he had contemplated relocating to Europe, narrowing his choices to England or Ireland. Ultimately, his wife, Marilou York, convinced him to stay.
Mark Hamill’s Reasons for Staying
Hamill recounted how his wife’s advice changed his perspective. “She’s very clever,” he admitted. “She said, ‘I’m surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country.’ That changed everything for me.” Despite his dissatisfaction with the country’s political direction, Hamill remains hopeful, saying, “I still believe there are more honest and decent people than there are the MAGA crowd. If I didn’t, I’d move back to England.”
Hamill’s Political Activism on Social Media
The BAFTA-winning actor, known for his outspoken nature, has transitioned away from platforms like Facebook and Twitter in favor of BlueSky to voice his political frustrations. Hamill likens today’s political landscape to a “sprawling political novel,” stating his disbelief at ongoing controversies, such as discussions about annexing territories like Canada and Greenland. “Our global reputation has been severely impacted,” he added, expressing concerns about the long-term consequences.
Celebrities Considering Relocation
Mark Hamill is not alone in his considerations. High-profile names such as Angelina Jolie and Rosie O’Donnell have also reflected on leaving the U.S. in recent years. According to Page Six, Jolie is preparing to relocate abroad after her youngest children turn 18 in 2026. Rosie O’Donnell has already moved to Ireland, citing personal reasons and her youngest child’s needs as a factor. Furthermore, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have permanently relocated to England out of concern for the potential rollback of LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S.
Emigration Trends Among Americans
CNN recently reported a surge in Americans applying for British citizenship in 2025. However, many face challenges such as work visas and financial limitations, which make relocation impractical for large portions of the population. Despite these hurdles, the growing trend underscores the heightened dissatisfaction among some U.S. citizens regarding the country’s evolving political and social climate.
The debate over emigration reflects the broader sentiments of uncertainty and discontent in modern America, with many citizens and public figures considering whether a life abroad might offer greater stability and peace.
