Fans of the beloved period drama Downton Abbey now have the opportunity to own a piece of its iconic history. Costumes, furniture, and even the Granthams’ family car from the hit ITV series and subsequent films are going under the hammer in an exclusive charity auction.
Costumes Worn by the Cast
Several iconic items worn by the show’s stars are available, including the wedding dress worn by Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley during her marriage to Matthew Crawley, played by Dan Stevens. The pale apricot chiffon gown, complete with ivory satin Mary Jane shoes, a paste tiara, silk tulle veil, and a bouquet of prop lilies, is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.
Also up for bidding is a dress worn by the late Dame Maggie Smith, who played Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, a fan-favorite character known for her sharp wit and elegant wardrobe.
From the Family Car to Servants’ Hall Treasures
The Granthams’ family car, a rare 1925 Sunbeam Saloon, is one of the most significant lots in the auction, estimated at £25,000 to £35,000. This timeless vehicle appeared prominently from season two through five and in all three Downton Abbey films.
Other notable items include the distinctive bell wall from the servants’ hall and a large 18th-century-style pitched pine refectory table used in season five. These memorable props bring back the essence of the Downton Abbey household and its intricate storytelling.
Scripts and More Unique Memorabilia
The auction also includes a script from season one, episode one, signed by key cast members such as Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, and Samantha Bond. This collectible is estimated to sell for £600 to £800. Fans of Mr. Carson, the household’s butler, might also find interest in his signature silver pocket watch, which is among the listed lots.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
All proceeds from the sale will go to Together for Short Lives, a charity dedicated to helping children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Gareth Neame, executive producer of Downton Abbey, expressed pride in contributing to the charity, saying, “The world of Downton Abbey is beloved around the globe for its rich, timeless storytelling. These iconic set items hold a special place in that history, and we are proud to see them help support the vital work of Together for Short Lives.”
The online auction is hosted by Bonhams and is open for bidding starting Monday. Visit Bonhams’ website to explore the collection and place your bid.
