Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition that causes breathing difficulties and persistent coughs. Worldwide, the disease is managed and awareness is raised through efforts from international organisations like the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). However, worsening air pollution, particularly in Delhi, is exacerbating the condition.
According to Dr. Neetu Jain, a Senior Consultant in Pulmonology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at PSRI Hospital, an upward trend in patient visits has been noted due to pollution-related symptoms. Both patients with pre-existing lung conditions and those with no prior history of such diseases have been affected. The air quality index (AQI) being consistently above 400 has led to dire health conditions, with a significant rise in emergency care needs.
On the occasion of the World COPD Day 2024, the theme being ‘Know Your Lung Function’, the emphasis is on the importance of assessing lung function using spirometry, a vital tool for early detection and effective management of COPD. Lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing COPD and improving lung health. Some key changes include quitting smoking, enrolling in a pulmonary rehabilitation program, practicing breathing exercises, avoiding environmental irritants, maintaining physical activity, adopting a healthy diet, managing stress and anxiety, getting vaccinated, ensuring quality sleep, and regularly monitoring symptoms.
By adopting these changes, individuals with COPD can significantly improve their lung health and enhance their overall quality of life.
