As Delhi experiences its worst air quality at the beginning of winter due to various pollutants, holistic lifestyle coach and nutritionist Luke Coutinho suggests a natural remedy to address respiratory issues resulting from pollution. He recommended Andrographis paniculata, or Kalmegh, a medicinal herb used in Ayurveda and traditional medicine, on Instagram.
According to Coutinho, Kalmegh provides several benefits. It possesses anti-inflammatory properties that could reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract thus providing relief for conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It may also thin mucus, making expulsion easier, particularly for those suffering from bronchitis or chronic respiratory infections. The herb is known for its immune-boosting properties due to compounds like andrographolide, which help fight respiratory infections often worsened by pollution.
Coutinho further points out that Kalmegh can neutralise the harmful effects of pollution-induced free radicals, thus preventing oxidative stress linked to respiratory diseases and other pollution-induced health issues. Regular consumption might assist in eliminating toxins accumulated due to pollutants, thereby protecting respiratory health.
Kalmegh can be consumed by boiling its leaves, or in capsule form. However, Coutinho advised consulting with a registered alternative medicine doctor before starting consumption. Despite its potential benefits, Kalmegh might not be suitable for everyone, especially those on other medications, so professional medical advice is necessary.
