The orthopaedics department at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) recently carried out a groundbreaking limb salvage surgery on a 57-year-old man, marking a significant milestone in medical history. M Eswaran, a resident of Moongiltholuvu village near Udumalaipettai, was diagnosed with a rare squamous cell carcinoma that had metastasized from oesophageal cancer. Dr. S Vetrivel Chezian, director of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, led the multidisciplinary team that successfully implanted a custom-made prosthesis on the patient’s left shoulder, preserving vital bone structures. This innovative procedure not only restored function to Eswaran’s arm but also set a new standard in limb salvage surgeries. The surgery, covered under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced care to all patients irrespective of their financial status.
