In October 2023, 35-year-old Matthew Collins from Aberdare, was diagnosed with a severe brain tumour. With the limited treatment options on the NHS, Collins dedicated his time and energy to finding alternative solutions. His research led him to a vaccine, DCVax-L, showing promising results in increasing survival rates.
Not available through the NHS, Collins decided to raise funds to secure this £75,000 treatment. Through the overwhelming support from the community since his diagnosis, he managed to raise nearly £200k, enough for three courses of the treatment. Collins expressed gratitude to those who contributed towards the cause.
His medical journey began in June last year following a seizure. Initially suspected as a stroke, it was later discovered he had a glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Post-surgery, he was informed the tumour would likely return.
Despite this grave prognosis, Collins forged forward. After three rounds of the DCVax-L vaccine, he still has a piece of his tumour saved for potential future treatments. He expresses frustration at the inadequate sample saved from his tumour but remains hopeful about other treatments abroad in Germany.
Beyond these treatments, Collins has made significant lifestyle changes and pursued other alternative therapies costing £4,000 a month. This includes dietary changes, giving up meat and reducing sugar, and various off-label medications. In spite of the frustrations he’s encountered, Collins is determined to focus on positive activities, invest in his health and explore different avenues of potential treatment.
