Understanding the Science of Wrinkle Formation and Skin Aging

New research from Binghamton University sheds light on the physics behind wrinkle formation and skin aging. Discover why uneven skin stretching and sunlight play essential roles.

The misconception that wrinkles solely result from aging or sun exposure is debunked by recent experiments. Binghamton University researchers found that wrinkles occur due to changes in skin elasticity resembling a stretched ‘silly putty’. The study, published in July 2025 in the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, provides scientific evidence that skin stress, not just collagen loss or UV damage, contributes to wrinkle development.

German and his team conducted tests on skin samples from individuals aged 16 to 91. They observed that older skin fails to stretch uniformly, leading to increased tension sideways. This heightened tension ultimately causes the skin’s outer layer to buckle, forming visible wrinkles. By utilizing a low-force tensometer, researchers demonstrated how youthful skin easily regains its shape compared to older skin, which struggles to revert to its original state.

Moreover, exposure to sunlight exacerbates skin aging and wrinkle formation by breaking down essential proteins such as collagen and elastin. This damage accelerates the buckling process, making individuals susceptible to premature wrinkling. Despite chronological age, prolonged sun exposure can significantly impact skin health.

Looking beyond conventional skincare approaches, future anti-wrinkle strategies may target rebalancing skin stresses. Researchers explore innovative solutions like micro-mesh patches to redistribute tension and peptides to alter dermal cell alignment. By addressing the physics underlying wrinkle formation, these advancements aim to delay the onset of wrinkles.

In addition to advanced treatments, dermatologists emphasize the importance of foundational practices. Consistent use of sunscreen, retinoids, and a protein-rich diet are key to maintaining healthy skin. Exploring gentle facial exercises and ensuring proper hydration and rest can further promote skin resilience and reduce mechanical stress.
