Many former pupils of St Columbs College have significantly impacted both local and global communities since the school’s inception in 1879. The Derry Journal has dedicated a special feature supplement to the Past Pupils Union (PPU), enriching the history and ongoing activities of this esteemed institution while providing interesting insights for friends and community members.
Over 25,000 boys have walked through the school doors, going on to excel in various fields such as medicine, law, media, sports, and the arts globally. Established in 1929, the Past Pupils Union has worked continually to connect with alumni, many of whom pursue higher education and careers outside of Ireland, creating opportunities that often lead them to settle away from Derry.
This year’s Alumni Illustrissimus recipient, Dr. David Stewart, represents those who have chosen to thrive locally, contributing significantly to the region’s fabric. The PPU hosts events like annual dinners and golf outings, fostering friendships and reminiscing about shared experiences. The upcoming annual dinner on November 8 aims to celebrate alumni connections and encourage attendance, especially from those who haven’t joined before.
With a new website enhancing alumni interaction through social media and forums, the PPU invites all past pupils to reconnect, remember, and enjoy each other’s company as they approach their centennial anniversary.
