The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a transformative project aimed at improving connectivity between Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai by awarding a substantial contract for a new bridge. This AED 786 million initiative is a strategic collaboration with Dubai Holding and underscores Dubai’s commitment to advancing its transportation infrastructure and urban development.
The bridge will extend 1,425 meters and will feature four lanes in each direction, designed to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour efficiently. To promote sustainable mobility, the structure will also include a dedicated pedestrian and cycling track. Located strategically between the Infinity Bridge and Port Rashid, the bridge will rise to a height of 18.5 meters above Dubai Creek, ensuring that maritime traffic flows smoothly through a 75-meter-wide navigational channel.
In addition to the main bridge, the project encompasses 2,000 meters of surface roads that will connect both ends of Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai, integrating seamlessly with the existing road network. This design aims to enhance traffic flow, alleviate congestion, and improve accessibility for both residents and visitors.
This bridge project is a key component of the larger Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project, which intends to revamp a 13-kilometer segment featuring 15 intersections that will benefit around one million individuals. It is projected that this infrastructure enhancement will reduce travel time significantly, from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes, while saving AED 45 billion over the next 20 years.
The partnership between Dubai Holding and RTA signifies a mutual commitment to elevating Dubai’s infrastructure. The bridge linking Dubai Islands to Bur Dubai will serve as a vital link in the development of integrated, future-ready communities.
Beyond this specific bridge project, the AED 6 billion agreement includes additional infrastructural upgrades in various critical areas such as Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), Dubai Production City, Business Bay, Palm Jumeirah, and International City (Phase 3). These enhancements will consist of new entry and exit points, flyovers, pedestrian bridges, and improvements to intersections and surface roads, all aimed at reducing travel times and facilitating smoother traffic flow.
Ultimately, the bridge linking Dubai Islands to Bur Dubai represents more than mere infrastructure; it serves as a gateway to connect communities, stimulate economic growth, and elevate Dubai’s stature as a premier urban destination.
